A grounding tester or earth resistance tester is a device used to check the electrical resistance of the ground, soil. Earth resistance is critically important for the safety and efficiency of electrical installations, as an incorrectly connected or too high value of earth resistance can lead to a risk of electric shock or damage to equipment.
Earth resistance measurement
In measuring earth resistance, the tester applies a certain voltage to the earth electrode and measures the resistance against a reference electrode, usually located at a certain distance from the main one. Depending on the results, the device determines the resistance in the soil.
The main types of earth resistance testers
1. Digital – They use a digital display to display resistance values, making them easy to use and read. They often have additional functions, such as measuring current, voltage and other parameters.
2. Analog – These are older types of devices that use analog arrows to display resistance values and have no other functions.
3. Four-pole testers (using the four-pole measurement method) – These are more precise devices that use four electrodes (two for supplying current and two for measuring voltage) to calculate resistance, eliminating the influence of contact resistance.
Grounding meters are essential tools when checking grounding installations in various industrial, commercial and residential facilities.
